Olio and Farina Franchises
Franchising is a very different type of business opportunity in Ireland as you are buying into a full concept which includes every aspect of running a particular business

Name:  Susan Mulvihill

Company Name: Italian Inspiration Ltd.

Location:  Limerick

Length of time in operation: Over 2 years

Professional background before becoming a franchisee: I held the position of Administration Manager in franchise operation for four years.  My duties included accounts, HR, payroll and general day to day running of a busy office.

Why did you become involved in franchising: After working within a franchise operation I felt it was the best way to become self employed.  I liked the idea of buying into a tried and tested concept.

Why did you choose this franchise business: I was looking for a business in the food industry and that was when I came across O&F.  I was very excited to become part of a new unique concept and as there was no O&F outlets in Ireland the challenge really drew me.  I really liked what O&F was offering to the public and thought that the market was ready for such a specialised concept.

How did you research the company before setting up: I checked it out on the web first of all and then contacted O&F for further information.  A meeting was then set up in their St. Albans store where I met with the Master Franchisee for the UK and also the MD of O&F Italia.

What difficulties did you face starting off: As I was the first O&F outlet in Ireland my first challenge was to get finance, usually franchise operations are looked on as good investment opportunity by the financial institutions however as this was the first of its kind in Ireland I had to convince them that it would be a success.  However once finance was arranged and I was in a position to open my store things moved very quickly and I was up and running thanks to the help of my Italian partners within 6 months of my original enquiry.

How did you overcome these difficulties: I had huge confidence in the brand and concept I never felt like it could fail and I think my confidence encouraged the bank to invest in me.  I put together a very detailed business plan and cashflow analysis and explained why it was going to work.

What advice would you give to others who have just started franchising or are looking for a franchise business in Ireland:  I would suggest that you get as much information as you can about the business you are interested in.  Also visit as many outlets as possible and really get to know the product/service. Being a franchisee is a very different type of business ownership as you are buying into a full concept which includes every aspect of running a particular business.  The product/service has to be right for you and you need to have confidence in the Franchisor that they know what they are doing and generally their way is the best way as it is tried and tested.
